As the name suggests, Audacity Portable is a portable application which can run on a Windows system without installation; from external or internal media, Audacity Portable will not create entries into the Windows Registry.
Select File - Open to open your sound file. Audacity can open a wide range of files. Audacity uses 'float' format for 32-bit recording instead of fixed integer format as normalized floating point values are quicker and easier to process on computers than fixed integer values and allow greater dynamic range to be retained even after editing. This is because intermediate signals during audio processing can have very variable values.
It is freely distributed as open source software that anybody can use. With the removal of Windows' sound recorder, there opened up a huge need for a free audio recording solution and the team behind Audacity took up that challenge.
